Astigmatism

Astigmatism causes blurred or distorted visual acuity due to a misshapenness of the cornea. The cornea of the eye is normally spherical in shape with equal curves in all directions. With astigmatism, the cornea is not spherical and creates unequal curves in all directions. As light enters an astigmatic cornea, it is refracted into multiple focuses and creates a warped image on the retina.

Treatment

Astigmatism is a fairly common condition and is usually treated through the use of prescription eyeglasses. Specially designed contact lenses can also be prescribed to correct for astigmatism. Large amounts of astigmatism can also be significantly reduced through the use of laser refractive surgery.
