Glaucoma Surgical Treatments

There are many surgical options available for treating glaucoma that can be done at the same time as cataract surgery or as a standalone procedure.

iStent

The iStent is a device that can be done at the same time as cataract surgery.  In this procedure, a very small stent is placed into the drainage system of the eye to allow more fluid to egress from the eye.  This procedure is used to lower the pressure in the eye and reduce a patient's dependence on drops.

Goniotomy

A goniotomy is a minimally invasive glaucoma procedure where a blade is used to remove the meshwork that covers the opening to the drainage system of the eye.  It can be done at the same time as cataract surgery or as a standalone procedure. This is done to decrease the pressure in the eye and decrease dependence on drops.

Canaloplasty

Canaloplasty is a minimally invasive glaucoma procedure that can be done at the time of surgery or as a standalone procedure.  A thick gel is injected into the drainage system of the eye to stretch the meshwork covering the drainage system as well as dilate the deeper canal system to allow more fluid to egress from the eye.  This is done to decrease the pressure in the eye and decrease dependence on drops.
